Isn’t Macro Counting Just Like Counting Calories?
Macros, short for macronutrients, are the three main nutrients that provide energy to our bodies: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. You can read more about the benefits of each macronutrient in this post. Each macro has a certain number of calories per gram. Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, proteins also contain 4 calories per gram, and fats contain 9 calories per gram.
When you see a food label with the macro breakdown of a food, you can calculate the calorie count by multiplying the number of grams of each macro by its respective calorie count per gram, and then adding up the totals. For example, if a food has 20 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of protein, and 10 grams of fat, the calorie count would be 190 calories.
20g carbs x 4 calories per gram = 80 calories from carbs
5g protein x 4 calories per gram = 20 calories from protein
10g fat x 9 calories per gram = 90 calories from fat
Total calorie count = 80 + 20 + 90 = 190 calories
But, isn't macro counting just like counting calories? Yes...and no.
While calorie counting only takes into account the total number of calories you consume, counting macros allows for more precise tracking of your food intake. Tracking macros breaks down your intake into proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, which can help you identify areas where you may be lacking or over-consuming.
Focusing on macros can also help you achieve a better body composition. Consuming enough protein can help build and maintain muscle mass. Additionally, counting macros can be customized to your individual needs and goals. Depending on your activity level, body type, and goals, you can adjust your macro ratios to optimize your performance and results.
Overall, counting macros provides a more detailed and personalized approach to nutrition tracking, which can help you achieve your health and fitness goals more effectively. So, the next time you see a food label, take note of the macro breakdown and consider counting your macros for a more precise approach to your nutrition.
